How do I prepare for a bed bug dog?

Preparing for Your K9 Bed Bug Inspection

A trained bed bug detection dog can sniff out live bed bugs and their eggs with incredible precision — but for them to do their job well, the inspection space must be properly prepared. Here’s what to do before your scheduled K9 visit from Birch Fumigators.

What You Need to Do Before the Inspection

  • Avoid Strong Scents:
At least 12 hours before your inspection, do not burn candles, incense, or use strong-smelling cleaning products, air fresheners, or perfumes. Strong odours can interfere with the dog’s ability to detect the subtle scent of live bed bugs.

  • Remove Food and Pet Distractions:
Keep pet food and water bowls off the floor during the inspection. If you have pets, please ensure they’re secured in another area for the duration of the visit.

  • Declutter Key Areas:
While you don’t need to move all your furniture, the dog will need access to baseboards, mattresses, headboards, furniture, and cracks in the flooring. If possible, clear floor space and move large objects slightly away from walls.

  • Limit Human Scent Residue:
It helps to reduce the amount of time spent sitting or lying on beds and furniture in the hours before inspection. This minimizes scent distractions.

Why Dogs Are So Effective at Finding Bed Bugs

Bed bug detection dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell, which allows them to detect even small infestations that might be missed by the human eye. At Birch Fumigators, our K9 teams are highly trained to locate:

  • Live bed bugs

  • Viable eggs

  • Early infestations

  • Residual presence after treatment

This means faster, more accurate inspections, which is especially valuable in large properties like hotels, apartment complexes, or multi-unit buildings.

What Happens During the Inspection

During your K9 inspection, the handler will guide the dog through your space, allowing them to check common hiding places. These may include:

  • Mattress seams

  • Bed frames and headboards

  • Behind baseboards

  • Inside furniture crevices

  • Along flooring edges

The entire process is quiet, discreet, and generally takes less than an hour for most residential spaces.
