German cockroaches, scientifically known as Blattella germanica, are one of the most common and notorious species of cockroaches found worldwide, especially in human habitats. Distinguishing features of German cockroaches include their relatively small size, typically about 13 to 16 millimetres in length, which is smaller than many other cockroach species. Though they are not proficient fliers, they possess a light brown to tan coloration with two dark, almost parallel stripes running from their head to the base of their wings. Unlike other species, German cockroaches are better at hiding and can be found in more diverse environments, especially in warm, humid areas close to food and water sources, such as kitchens and bathrooms in residential and commercial properties.
